“The dipole-dipole interaction has the simple angle-dependence given in eqn (3.2.6). At a given value of R, the most favourable orientation has θA = θB = 0. (See Fig. 3.2a.) In this case, the angular factor that multiplies the magnitude μμ/4πεR of the interaction is -2. Conversely, the most unfavourable orientation has θA = π θB = 0 or vice versa, with an angular factor of + 2 (Fig. 3.2b). If the molecules are linear, however the orientation with θA = θB = π/2 and φ = π may be preferable (Fig. 3.2d); in this case the angular factor is only -1, but it may be possible for the molecules to pack more closely, increasing the R-3 factor.”
